The Pins

Maybe its the season turning, or the fact that I just watched the season finale of Mad Men last night and am feeling nostalgic for an era not my own. Or perhaps it’s simply because The Pins are a refreshingly talented group of girls who make songs that feel like they were already 1950′s AM radio classics. Either way, I’ve got this song on repeat today.

This trio of lovely ladies hail from the UK, and have just released their first EP “Introducing…The Pins”, available now via Music Glue.

Also, they are supporting Laura Marling on her upcoming UK tour, starting next month, so anyone in the area, check ‘em out!

Stornoway

I have a massive band-crush on Stornoway. Not just because they are Oxford grads (Two of the band members have PhDs). Not just because they are British (Sure doesn’t hurt). Perhaps partly because I detect a kazoo at the end of one of their songs. But mostly because they make refreshingly smart, yet quirky, folk-pop music. Also, they prompted me to google the word “Zorbing”. Check em out.

Download Zorbing here.

Sam Messenger drawings

I have not been able to find much substantial information on Sam Messenger via the world wide web, however, I do know that he is an artist living in London, and that I am obsessed with these pieces. They are mostly a combination of  pen, ink and watercolor on paper. Even the ones that appear to be woven. All hand drawn. Ahhh. I love them.

Local Natives

So, I’ve been digging on the Los Angeles quintet, Local Natives for a bit now, but just managed to get ahold of their debut album Gorilla Manor yesterday. (It was released in the UK last year, but isn’t officially out in the US until Feb. 16th.) Its a pretty phenomenal record. With their delicate 3-part harmonies, and contagious, almost anthem-like beats, they kind of remind me of Fleet Foxes or Bowerbirds with a bite.

They’re touring Europe right now, so for my pals in London- go catch em! (Jan 19th @ Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, and March 2nd @ Heaven) For the rest of us, enjoy these two tracks, World News (album version) and Airplanes (live Daytrotter session)

Rohan Eason

I am really digging illustrator Rohan Eason. His work reminds me a bit of Victorian artist Aubrey Beardsley (One of my early inspirations as a wee art student). Also, he has an amazing children’s book out called Anna & The Witche’s Bottle that I want so bad it hurts.

The book was written by Geoff Cox and is accompanied by a soundtrack recording by Martin Roman Rebelski (from the Doves). How cool is that?

Kate MccGwire

These pigeon-feather sculptures by Kate MccGwire, London, are so beautiful. I wish I could see them up-close. I feel like they would be awesome to draw. She has some work in the upcoming show, Strangeness and Charm, this February at the London gallery Viktor Wynd. If I were in town, I’d check it out for sure.

HOLE Reunion, aka: my 13 year-old self weeps

So, tickets go on sale tomorrow for Hole‘s (I use that name loosely) first show in 11 years. It will be at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London with Courtney Love and Melissa Auf Der Maur as the only remaining members of the band from yesteryear.

Mumford and Sons (Beatles Cover)

My lovely man-friend underwhelmer found this for me today. Check it out. Mumford and Sons are one of my favorite bands coming out of London right now. Their album Sigh No More is due to be released here in the states early in 2010, but I may post some songs off that album on here for you guys shortly if you ask nicely.

In the meantime, enjoy this beatles cover.
